Easter Seals of Birmingham
Exceeds Fundraising Expectations
for Third Annual “Walk with Me”

Despite rain and an unstable economy, Easter Seals of the Birmingham area raised more than $67,000 at the third annual “WALK WITH ME” fund-raiser, Saturday March 14th, 2009 at Veterans Park in Alabaster. All funds raised will benefit the Easter Seals Pediatric Therapy Clinic, which provides Speech, Occupational and Physical Therapy to children with disabilities regardless of their ability to pay.

Matthew

Walk With Matthew….
Matthew is an excitable 2 ½ year old whose curiosity drives him to meet new challenges. With the help of therapists at Easter Seals, Matthew can communicate with his hands and eyes to make choices. The physical therapy has helped to strengthen his core enabling him to walk. Matthew’s father, Brian, says, “Although we have no diagnosis for Matthew, we know that Jesus is the Great Physician and are absolutely confident that God is answering prayers about healing him. One of theways that God is healing Matthew is through Easter Seals.” Matthew is a real thrill-seeker and now can do the things he enjoys like wrestling with his dad. Mathew has been receiving Occupational, Speech and Physical Therapy at Easter Seals since November 2007.

Dennis

Walk With Dennis…
3 ½ year-old Dennis was a healthy baby. At 9 months old he became ill with rotavirus, a stomach virus that plagues many children. The virus caused dehydration, which led to a stroke resulting in damage that effected many areas of development. At this time doctors learned that Dennis had been born with MMA, a disorder where the body is unable to break down protein. Physicians confirm that the MMA caused the dehydration, which led to the stroke and caused motor skill issues. “When Dennis started Easter Seals in January of 2008, he could only say 5 words, now he has lots to say.

Dorian

Walk With Dorian…
Dorian is a child in Helena that people have come to love. He loves to give everyone he meets hugs and kisses. 8 year-old Dorian was born with Autism. At the age of 4, Dorian was reading books but his parents thought he was just enjoying the pictures. Once he started receiving therapy at Easter Seals, everyone learned that Dorian was actually reading and memorizing books. With the help of his speech pathologist, Dorian can communicate with his family about what he’s reading. “It’s wonderful that Dorian is able to communicate about things he wants.” says mom, Kimberly. Dorian has been receiving speech and occupational therapy for 3 years at Easter Seals and he continues to show the world that autism does not define him.

Cassidy

Walk With Cassidy…
“My name is Cassidy and thanks to my speech pathologist at Easter Seals, I can now tell everyone how smart I am.” These are things that Cassidy will tell you when you meet her, but not with her mouth. Cassidy is an energetic and enthusiastic 9 year old that was born with Down syndrome. She is unable to speak clearly, but thanks to her augmentative communications device, better known as a talker, she can now better communicate with the world. “Cassidy is very smart but when nobody is able to understand you, it doesn’t matter what you know.” says her mother Tonya. Cassidy has been with Easter Seals for 2 ½ years and continues to take on new challenges and learn new skills every day.
